Chongqing

The Mountain City Where Spice, Rivers, and Cyberpunk Dreams Collide

Why Visit Chongqing

🏯

Cyberpunk Cityscape

Wander a city where trains run through buildings, highways stack six layers high, and Hongya Cave's cascading lights create a real-life Blade Runner backdrop — Chongqing is unlike any city on earth.

🌊

Three Gorges Majesty

Embark on a Yangtze River cruise through the legendary Three Gorges — Qutang, Wu, and Xiling — where sheer cliffs rise thousands of feet from the water along one of the world's great river journeys.

🌶

Sichuan Hot Pot

Chongqing is the undisputed capital of mala (numbing-spicy) cuisine. The city's legendary hot pot — bubbling cauldrons of chili oil and Sichuan peppercorns — is a gastronomic rite of passage.

UNESCO Treasures

Discover the Dazu Rock Carvings — over 50,000 Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian figures carved into cliffs between the 9th and 13th centuries — and the dramatic karst landscapes of Wulong.

Top Attractions

Hongya Cave
#1

Hongya Cave (Hongyadong)

An 11-story stilt-house complex clinging to a cliff above the Jialing River that transforms into a glittering spectacle at night. The UNESCO-listed architecture recreates old Chongqing — explore handicraft shops, sample local snacks, and find the perfect rooftop bar for panoramic river views.

Three Gorges
#2

Three Gorges & Yangtze River Cruise

Board a luxury cruiser in Chongqing for a 3-4 day voyage through the Three Gorges — the most dramatic stretch of the Yangtze. Highlights include the narrow Qutang Gorge, the ethereal Wu Gorge shrouded in mist, and the massive Three Gorges Dam. Shore excursions to Fengdu Ghost City and Shennong Stream add cultural depth.

Ciqikou Ancient Town
#3

Ciqikou Ancient Town (Porcelain Village)

A 1,700-year-old river port town with narrow flagstone lanes, traditional teahouses, and artisan workshops. Once a major porcelain production center (hence the name), today it's a charming tangle of snack stalls, folk music performances, and calligraphy shops. Try the famous Chen Mahua (fried dough twists).

Dazu Rock Carvings
#4

Dazu Rock Carvings

A UNESCO World Heritage site featuring some of China's finest religious rock art. Unlike earlier grottoes, Dazu's carvings blend Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian themes in vivid, narrative detail. The Beishan and Baodingshan sites showcase thousands of figures, with the 31-meter reclining Buddha being the undisputed highlight.

Wulong Karst
#5

Wulong Karst National Park

Another UNESCO site, famous for its Three Natural Bridges — massive limestone arches spanning dramatic gorges. The karst landscape of sinkholes, caves, and forest-covered canyons served as a filming location for Transformers: Age of Extinction. The glass observation deck at Longshuixia Fissure overlooks a 200m-deep gorge.

Best Time to Visit

🌸

Spring (Mar-May)

Mild and pleasant (15-25°C) with occasional rain. The city's parks burst with cherry blossoms and magnolias. March-April is a great time for Three Gorges cruises before the summer heat and crowds arrive.

🌞

Autumn (Sep-Nov)

The best season — comfortable temperatures (15-25°C) and the famous "Chongqing fog" burns off by mid-morning. The mountain scenery around Wulong and Dazu is spectacular with autumn colors. October has the most pleasant weather for city exploration.

Summer (Jun-Aug)

Infamously hot and humid (30-40°C) — Chongqing is one of China's "Three Furnaces." The city comes alive at night. Hongya Cave's night views are most magical. Three Gorges cruises offer refreshing breezes on deck. Start sightseeing early and embrace the evening culture.

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Cool and damp (5-10°C) with heavy fog — which is actually part of Chongqing's mystical charm. Perfect hot pot weather! The mountain landscapes take on a mysterious, mist-shrouded quality. Fewer tourists and lower prices. Dazu Rock Carvings are particularly atmospheric in winter light.
