China's Vast Western Frontier — Ancient Silk Road Cities, Alpine Lakes & Nomad Culture

Xinjiang: Where the Silk Road Comes Alive

China's largest province — one-sixth of the country — is the beating heart of the ancient Silk Road. From Kashgar's legendary Sunday Bazaar to Kanas Lake's turquoise waters, from the flaming red cliffs of Turpan to the lavender fields of Ili, every corner tells a 2,000-year story. Xinjiang is where deserts meet snow-capped peaks, where Uyghur, Kazakh, and Han cultures blend in a vibrant tapestry unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Xinjiang's Must-See Wonders

Kashgar Old City

The westernmost city in China and the best-preserved Silk Road city. Lose yourself in the maze-like Old City, witness the legendary Sunday Bazaar, and feel the pulse of 2,000 years of trade.

Kanas Lake

An alpine paradise in the Altay Mountains. Turquoise waters, golden birch forests in autumn, and the mysterious 'Kanas Monster'. Hemu Village nearby is a fairytale of wooden cabins and morning mist.

Turpan Oasis

The second-lowest depression on Earth and the hottest place in China. Explore the ancient Jiaohe ruins, taste the world's sweetest grapes in Grape Valley, and marvel at the millennia-old karez irrigation system.

Heavenly Lake (Tianchi)

A crystal-clear alpine lake at 1,980m, nestled beneath the snow-capped Bogda Peak. Boat rides, spruce forest hikes, and Kazakh yurt visits — just 2 hours from Urumqi.

Xinjiang Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit

May-October is ideal. September-October for Kanas autumn colors (truly spectacular). July-August for Ili lavender and grasslands. Winter (Dec-Feb) for Hemu's snow fairytale.

Getting Around

Xinjiang is vast — about the size of France and Germany combined. Our tours use a mix of private vehicles, domestic flights, and high-speed trains to cover the distances comfortably.

What to Eat

Don't miss: lamb kebabs, polo (Uyghur pilaf), laghman (hand-pulled noodles), nang bread, samsa (baked meat pies), and Xinjiang's famous sweet melons and grapes.

Altitude & Climate

Most destinations are below 2,000m (no altitude concerns). The Karakoram Highway reaches 4,700m. Climate varies dramatically — bring layers for hot desert days and cool mountain evenings.
